An investigation is underway to determine if a tornado went through the Tasso Lake area northeast of Huntsville Tuesday evening.
Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder tells us they have heard word-of-mouth reports of 100-foot downed trees and dock damage in the area.
“For now officially we can’t really say anything,” he tells Country 102. “There’s a potential tornado, but there could also possibly be a downburst. There’s a research team from the University of Western Ontario called the Northern Tornadoes Project. They’re out in the Penetanguishene area investigating another potential tornado today (update below) and we’ve forwarded them the reports about Tasso Lake.”
Flisfeder says the group will be investigating the reports soon. Sometimes tornado classifications can be made based on before-and-after satellite imagery to determine if there is any damage scarring in an area.
Flisfeder adds that Environment Canada has also received a report that a boat was flipped upside down off Limberlost Road.
He expects Environment Canada and the Northern Tornadoes Project will have a clearer picture of whether Tuesday evening’s reports reflect a true tornado event in the coming days.
NTP has received reports of damage in the Penetanguishene area, close to where a supercell with strong low-level rotation moved through yesterday. An NTP ground / drone survey team is on its way this morning. Additional reports can be sent to @NTP_Reports or ntp@uwo.ca. #ONStorm pic.twitter.com/wdrxu7Lz0P
