Bracebridge Council has unanimously appointed Rick Maloney to the Office of Mayor for the remainder of the 2018-2022 term.
Maloney has served the Town of Bracebridge since 2010 as Deputy Mayor, first as a Councillor in Macaulay Ward for two terms (2010-2014 and 2014-2018) and more recently as a District Councillor since 2018.
The Mayoral seat was declared vacant on June 29 after the previous Mayor, Graydon Smith, was elected as Member of Provincial Parliament for the Parry Sound-Muskoka Riding in June. In accordance with provincial legislation, the vacancy must be filled if it occurs more than 90 days from voting day in a regular election.
“It is my honour to serve the Town of Bracebrige as Mayor for the remainder of this term. I am proud to be able to continue to serve this great town and thank my family and colleagues for your confidence and support,” said Rick Maloney, Mayor, Town of Bracebridge.
Recognizing the importance of the role and to ensure continuity to the end of the term, filling the role through the appointment of a current member of council was important and provides stability. Council will consider the vacancy now left at District Council at its meeting on July 20.
A municipal election will take place on October 24 to determine the mayor, council and school board trustees for the 2022-2026 term.
