King Charles III was officially proclaimed as sovereign by the Accession Council at St. James’s this morning.
The accession ceremony is a key constitutional and ceremonial step in introducing the new monarch to the country.
The original purpose of the ceremony was to announce the regnal name of the new monarch, but in modern times it was revealed he would be known as King Charles III shortly after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
It dates back centuries, to a time long before radio and television existed.
Today was the first time in history it was televised.
Charles automatically became king when his mother the Queen died on Thursday.
Details on a State Funeral for the late Queen haven’t been made officially public, but there is speculation it could happen on Monday, September 19th.
Palace officials have also given no information regarding a coronation for the new King.
